Suna Besha, also known as Rajadhiraja Besha is a significant event where the Hindu deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are adorned with gold jewellery. This ceremonial adornment occurs five times a year, with the Suna Besha during the month of Ashadha being particularly notable as it follows the Rath Yatra.

During Suna Besha, the deities are adorned with gold plates on their hands and feet. Lord Jagannath also carries a gold Chakra in his right hand and a silver conch in his left hand. This ritual takes place after Bahuda Ekadashi, the day after the deities return from Gundicha Temple, on the 11th day of the bright fortnight in Ashadha.

Among the 32 forms (Beshas) of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, Suna Besha holds special significance for devotees due to its grand display on the chariots. The intricate gold ornaments used in the ceremony are stored in the temple’s treasury known as Bhitara Bhandara Ghara.

This event not only showcases the splendour of the deities but also symbolizes their majesty and divine presence, attracting numerous devotees who come to witness and seek blessings during this auspicious occasion.
