Severe Heatwave Sweeps India, Odisha Records 45 Deaths

3rd June 2024- According to IMD forecasts, regions including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha will experience intense heatwave conditions today. Additionally, isolated pockets in Bihar will face hot and humid weather on June 2 and June 4, while similar conditions are expected in Konkan and Goa on June 2 and June 3, and in Odisha on June 5 and June 6, 2024.

The heatwave in Odisha has been particularly devastating. The state has recorded a significant number of heat-related deaths has claimed 45 more lives in the past 24 hours. With this, the death toll due to severe heat in the state has now reached 141, underscoring the severity of the situation. The IMD has predicted that the heatwave conditions in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and isolated areas of Jammu and Kashmir will persist until June 4, adding to the growing concern for public health and safety.

As the Southwest monsoon progresses over parts of southern India, bringing relief to regions like Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh with widespread light to moderate rainfall, the northern and central parts of the country remain gripped by severe heat. The IMD’s warnings highlight the urgent need for preparedness and preventive measures to mitigate the impacts of the ongoing heatwave.
