05/07/2024- Rishi Sunak has announced his resignation as Conservative Party leader after a defeat for his party. Britain’s Prime Minister-elect, Keir Starmer, has pledged to initiate a period of “national renewal” following the Labour Party’s victory in the general election.

Sunak conceded defeat on today, acknowledging that the opposition Labour Party had won the election. As ballot counting continued across the country, the Conservatives faced a historic defeat, leaving the party in disarray and likely prompting a leadership contest to replace Sunak.

Labour’s triumph saw the party surpass the 326-seat threshold needed for a working majority in the House of Commons, marking a significant shift in the UK’s political landscape.
