17th July 2024-
Today marks the celebration of the Suna Besha ritual in Puri, following the conclusion of the Bahuda Yatra on Monday. The Holy Trinity—Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath—will be adorned in resplendent gold ornaments on their chariots at the Puri Bada Danda.

The Suna Besha, also known as Rajadhiraja Besha, Raja Besha, and Rajarajeshwara Besha, is a special festival where the deities are lavishly decorated with gold jewellery. This ritual occurs the day after the deities return from the Gundicha Temple, on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi Tithi. Of the 32 different attires or Beshas of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, Suna Besha is one of the most eagerly anticipated by devotees.

During this ceremony, the deities will be dressed in heavy gold ornaments. Lord Jagannath will bear a gold chakra (disc) on his right hand and a silver conch on his left. Lord Balabhadra will be adorned with a gold plough on his left hand and a golden mace on his right. Devi Subhadra’s forehead will be decorated with an emerald (panna).

The Suna Besha ritual will commence at 4:30 am atop the chariots, with devotees allowed to view the deities from 6 pm to 11 pm. Security measures have been intensified in Puri, with drones deployed to manage traffic and parking, as an estimated 20 lakh devotees are expected to gather to witness the Suna Besha.
