3rd June 2024- Praggnanandhaa Stuns Fabiano Caruana in Norway Chess, Defeats Both World No. 1 and No. 2 in Same Event
In a landmark event for Indian chess, young prodigy Praggnanandhaa secured a victory over World No. 2 Fabiano Caruana in Round 5 of the Norway Chess tournament. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as Praggnanandhaa has now defeated both World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and World No. 2 Caruana in the same classical format event. The latest defeat has pushed Caruana down to World No. 3, with Nakamura rising to No. 2.
This win follows Praggnanandhaa’s impressive performance at the FIDE World Cup last year, where he overcame both Caruana and World No. 3 Hikaru Nakamura to reach the final, eventually falling to Carlsen in tiebreaks.
Reflecting on his game, Praggnanandhaa said, “It’s not easy to outplay such a strong opponent in these kinds of endgames where there is just a very slight advantage. So I’m very happy with the result.” Nakamura, who defeated Praggnanandhaa in a previous round, continues to hold the top spot in the open tournament standings at Norway Chess.
Praggnanandhaa’s remarkable performance underscores his growing prominence in the international chess scene and cements his status as a formidable competitor.
