June 19, 2024 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Nalanda University campus near the historic ruins of Rajgir today. The inauguration marks a significant milestone in the revival of the ancient seat of learning, blending modern infrastructure with the rich legacy of Nalanda.
The event was attended by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Nalanda University Chancellor Arvind Panagariya.
Foreign envoys from 17 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, were also present. The state-of-the-art campus, worth Rs 1700 crore, features two academic blocks with 40 classrooms, accommodating a total seating capacity of around 1900 students. Additionally, it includes two modern auditoriums, each with a seating capacity of 300, designed to host various academic and cultural events.
