26th June 2024- BJP nominee Om Birla has been re-elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate secured the post through a voice vote in the lower house of Parliament, with the numbers in favour of the ruling coalition. Om Birla is the new speaker for the 18th Loksabha.
Following his victory, Birla received congratulations from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who both escorted him to the Speaker’s chair. Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence in Birla’s experience from his previous term, stating it would help guide the country further. Birla’s opponent in the election was Congress candidate K Suresh.
