7th June 2024- Odisha has been struggling with relentless heat waves since the start of summer, resulting in tragic consequences. At least 151 suspected heatstroke-related deaths have been reported across various districts, including Bolangir, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Sonepur, Sundergarh, and Balasore.
Despite sporadic thunderstorms over the past two weeks, the state has found no respite from the oppressive heat, intensifying the urgent need for the monsoon’s arrival. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a glimmer of hope, predicting the southwest monsoon to reach Odisha within the next 2-3 days, ahead of the usual date of June 13. This suggests that the state could experience its first monsoon showers by early next week.
As Odisha braces for the monsoon, a cyclonic circulation over northwest Madhya Pradesh and an associated trough extending to West Bengal are expected to bring heavy rainfall to isolated areas on June 7-8, providing a much-needed reprieve from the intense heat.
