03/07/2024- To safeguard its citizens from lightning strikes, the Odisha government has announced plans to plant nearly 19 lakh palm trees this year. Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Debidutta Biswal, emphasized the life-saving role of these trees, noting, “As the tallest trees in their localities, palm trees act as excellent lightning arrestors, effectively arresting lightning and saving lives. The decision to plant these trees is a crucial step in reducing the number of lightning-related deaths.”

Authorities have mandated that individuals obtain permission before cutting down any palm trees, further ensuring the preservation of these natural protectors.

Over the past 11 years, lightning strikes have claimed 3,790 lives in Odisha, with 90 per cent of the victims hailing from rural areas. The government’s initiative aims to significantly decrease these tragic incidents by leveraging the natural protective qualities of palm trees.
