Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Strikes in Japan, No Tsunami Risk Reported

3rd June 2024- The Japan Meteorological Agency reported a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hitting Ishikawa Prefecture early Monday morning, with no tsunami risk confirmed by authorities, NHK reported. The earthquake occurred at approximately 6:31 am, with its epicentre estimated at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Wajima and Suzu cities experienced tremors at an intensity of upper 5 on Japan’s seismic scale. Noto town felt tremors at an intensity of lower 5, while Nanao city, Anamizu town, and parts of Niigata Prefecture registered an intensity of 4.

After the earthquake, East Japan Railway temporarily suspended services on both the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Joetsu Shinkansen bullet train lines due to a power outage. This measure was taken to ensure passenger safety and to conduct thorough inspections of the railway infrastructure. Efforts are underway to restore power and resume normal train operations as quickly as possible.
