Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Hits Japan’s Ibaraki Prefecture

17th July 2024- On Tuesday, Japan’s Ibaraki Prefecture, situated just northeast of Tokyo, experienced an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.2, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The earthquake occurred at 10:19 p.m. local time (1319 GMT), registering a 3 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7.

The JMA identified the epicentre off southern Ibaraki, an earthquake at the depth of 70 km, with coordinates of 36.1 degrees north latitude and 140.1 degrees east longitude. Central Tokyo felt the tremors strongly, though no tsunami warnings were issued.
