25th June 2024- For the first time since India’s independence, the election for the Lok Sabha Speaker will see a contest. The NDA has fielded former Speaker Om Birla, while the opposition INDIA bloc has chosen veteran Congress leader K Suresh as their candidate.
Om Birla, a BJP MP, previously served as the Speaker from 2019 to 2024 during the Modi 2.0 government. The NDA’s decision to nominate Birla came after the ruling coalition and the opposition failed to reach a consensus. To build an agreement, the government deployed Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
On the other hand, the opposition’s INDIA bloc has put forward K Suresh, an eight-time MP from Congress, marking a significant challenge to the NDA’s nominee. This historic contest underscores the current political dynamics and the heightened engagement between the ruling party and the opposition.
