04/07/2024- The flood situation in Assam continues to worsen, with eight more fatalities reported and over 16.25 lakh people affected across 27 districts as of Wednesday.
In Kaziranga National Park, 17 animals have succumbed to drowning, while 72 others have been rescued from the floodwaters, an official confirmed on Thursday. Among the deceased animals are 11 hog deer, five of which died during treatment. Rescued wildlife includes 63 hog deer, two otters, two sambar deer, two scoop owls, one rhino calf, one Indian hare, and one jungle cat.
Currently, 26 animals are under treatment, and 29 have been released after recovery, according to the official. As of Wednesday, 11 animals had died, and 65 had been rescued in the park.
Out of the total 233 camps in the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 141 remain inundated, down from 173 on Wednesday. The Eastern (Agoratoli) range has 21 of its 34 camps flooded, the central range has 38 of 58 camps inundated, the Western (Bagori) range has 33 of 39 camps submerged, Burapahar has 10 of 25 camps affected, and Bokakhat has three of nine camps under water.
Nine camps have been vacated by forest personnel, including two each in Agoratoli and the central range, three in Bokakhat, and one each in the Biswanath and Nagaon wildlife divisions.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) are in effect, restricting vehicular traffic on NH-37 (New NH-715) and limiting speeds to between 20 and 40 km/h.
