New Delhi, Mar 20: Highlighting the scale and impact of India’s transport ecosystem, Shri Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, stated at WION World Pulse that the sector has generated over 4.5 crore jobs and emerged as a key driver of India’s economic growth.

Emphasising the sector’s rapid expansion, Shri Nitin Gadkari noted that the size of India’s transport industry has grown more than threefold from ₹7 lakh crore in 2014 to ₹23 lakh crore today, reflecting the country’s accelerating infrastructure push.

Shri Nitin Gadkari Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, said,

“The transport sector is the backbone of India’s growth. From generating over 4.5 crore jobs to contributing significantly to exports and revenue, it plays a critical role in driving the economy forward.”

Positioning India in the global context, he highlighted that the country has risen to become the third-largest transport industry globally, surpassing Japan, with only the United States and China ahead in terms of industry size.

He reiterated that India remains the fastest-growing major economy, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a $5 trillion economy, with infrastructure and transport playing a central role in achieving this ambition.

He also stressed the government’s policy direction for the sector, focusing on making transport safer, pollution-free, and sustainable, aligning economic growth with environmental priorities.

Sharing a practical example of infrastructure-led problem solving, the minister recalled his intervention at Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan, where targeted road expansion was undertaken to ease congestion, underscoring the importance of on-ground execution in improving urban mobility.

The address reinforced the critical role of transport infrastructure as a multiplier for economic activity, employment generation, and national competitiveness.
