18th July 2024- The selection meeting for India’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, originally scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed to today. The Indian squad announcement, eagerly awaited, is expected to bring several surprises. With the tour beginning on July 27 with a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series, speculation is rife about the potential new T20I captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the format following India’s T20 World Cup triumph last month.
Gautam Gambhir, recently appointed as the new head coach, will be making his debut in the role following Rahul Dravid’s departure. There are reports that senior players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah might miss the white-ball tour. However, it is now suggested that Rohit Sharma could be available for the ODI series.
Hardik Pandya, who served as vice-captain during the T20 World Cup, was a frontrunner for the captaincy. Yet, recent reports indicate that Suryakumar Yadav, his Mumbai Indians teammate, might take on the leadership role instead. KL Rahul is expected to make a comeback and could lead the team if Rohit Sharma is unavailable. Shubman Gill, who recently captained India to a T20I series win over Zimbabwe, might step aside with the return of senior players for the Lanka tour.
The selection meeting, led by Gautam Gambhir, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah, will begin at 5:30 PM today.
