20th June 2024- India has experienced 20% less rainfall since the start of the monsoon season on June 1, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The country received 64.5 mm of rainfall from June 1 to 18, which is 20% below the long-period average (LPA) of 80.6 mm.
The IMD’s detailed regional analysis revealed significant variations across the country:
Northwest India: Received 10.2 mm of rainfall, 70% below normal.
Central India: Received 50.5 mm of rainfall, 31% below normal.
South Peninsula: Received 106.6 mm of rainfall, 16% above normal.
East and Northeast India: Received 146.7 mm of rainfall, 15% below normal.
The southwest monsoon made its arrival in parts of the Nicobar Islands on May 19. By May 26, it had spread over much of the southern and central Bay of Bengal, coinciding with Cyclone Remal. On May 30, the monsoon reached Kerala and the northeastern states, arriving two and six days earlier than usual, respectively.
The forecast indicates that overall rainfall across the country in June is likely to be below normal, with expected precipitation less than 92% of the LPA. This shortfall could have significant implications for agriculture and water resources in the affected regions.
