20th July 2024-
The Indian women’s cricket team kicked off their Asia Cup 2024 campaign with a decisive seven-wicket win against Pakistan at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Sri Lanka. Chasing a target of 109, openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma shared an impressive 85-run stand. D Hemalatha added a brisk 40-run knock to edge India closer to victory. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues then steered India home with plenty of overs to spare, with Rodrigues hitting the winning run in the final over bowled by Sadia Iqbal.

Pakistan, after choosing to bat, were quickly in trouble, losing both openers in the first four overs. Although they recovered slightly to 57/3 by the 11th over, the departure of Nida Dar triggered a collapse. Sidra Ameen’s attempt to stabilize the innings fell short, and Pakistan failed to form significant partnerships. Late contributions from Tuba Hassan and Fatima Sana were not enough, as Pakistan managed only 108 runs.

India’s bowling attack was on point, with Pooja Vastrakar taking two early wickets. Deepti Sharma was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets, while Renuka Singh and Shreyanka Patil each secured two wickets. This dominant performance gives India a strong start in defending the Women’s T20 Asia Cup title.
