IMD Issues Red Alert for Mumbai, More Rain Expected

July 9, 2024: Mumbai, India’s financial hub, experienced severe disruption on Monday due to relentless heavy rain, with no relief in sight as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red’ alert for Tuesday, July 9. As a precaution, all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and rural areas of Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg will remain closed on Tuesday.

Some areas in Mumbai recorded over 300 mm of rainfall in just six hours ending at 7 AM, leading to severe flooding in roads and low-lying regions. The IMD’s red alert forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai on Tuesday. BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagarani has advised citizens to exercise caution and avoid leaving their homes unless necessary.

The IMD has predicted continued heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Mumbai until July 12. Similar weather conditions are expected in Palghar, Thane, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nasik, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Sholapur, Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Osmanabad, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Washim, and Yavatmal through July 12.

In light of the IMD’s warning, the BMC announced that all civic, government, and private schools and colleges will be closed as a precautionary measure. Additionally, Mumbai University has postponed all examinations scheduled for Tuesday, both morning and afternoon sessions. Pooja Roudale, Director of the Examination and Evaluation Board, stated that new dates for these exams will be announced soon.
