Odisha Braces for Heavy Rainfall

19th July 2024-
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for Odisha, predicting heavy rainfall for several parts of the state over the next four days. This is due to a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal.

As of today, July 19th, the low-pressure area over the central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal has moved to the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off the Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts. The IMD forecasts that this low-pressure area is likely to develop into a depression within the next 12 hours and move northwestwards, crossing the Odisha coast in the subsequent 24 hours.

Districts on Orange Alert

The IMD has issued orange warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts, including Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Boudh, and Puri. Specifically, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, and Koraput are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal and along and off the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal for the next two days due to rough sea conditions.

Bhubaneswar has already experienced heavy rainfall today. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather information.
