3rd June 2024- Gautam Gambhir, fresh off his role as mentor in Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) victorious IPL 2024 campaign, is being considered by the BCCI for the position of India’s head coach following Rahul Dravid’s tenure, which ends after the ongoing T20 World Cup. Though it’s unclear if Gambhir has formally applied, he expressed his enthusiasm for the role at an event in Abu Dhabi, stating, “There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team, I would love to coach India”
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has indicated a strong preference for appointing an Indian coach to helm the national cricket team. Should Gautam Gambhir be selected for this prestigious role, he would be required to step down from his current position at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to comply with the BCCI’s conflict of interest regulations. Gambhir’s illustrious career is marked by his critical contributions to India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2007 and the ODI World Cup victory in 2011. Additionally, he enjoyed a successful tenure as captain of KKR, leading the team to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.
