July 11, 2024 — The sacred ‘Hera Panchami Niti’ will be observed today as Maa Mahalakshmi, the wife of Lord Jagannath, makes her annual visit to Shree Gundicha Temple. This ritual is celebrated on the fifth day of the Rath Yatra festival.
During the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath, accompanied by his divine weapon Sri Sudarshana, along with his brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra, leaves Srimandir for a nine-day journey to Shree Gundicha Temple, leaving Maa Mahalakshmi behind at Srimandir.
Angered by being left behind, Maa Mahalakshmi travels to Shree Gundicha Temple in a palanquin to demand Lord Jagannath’s return. To appease her, Lord Jagannath offers her the “Adhar Chumbita Mala ” Despite this, the servitors close the main doors of Shree Gundicha Temple in response to Maa Mahalakshmi’s anger.
Feeling insulted by this act, Maa Mahalakshmi returns to Srimandir through the Nakachana Gate. She instructs one of her attendants to damage a part of Lord Jagannath’s chariot, symbolizing her displeasure and ensuring that he cannot return without her consent.
