July 8, 2024: Heavy rains on Sunday led to severe waterlogging, prolonged traffic jams, and disruptions to local train services and flight operations in Mumbai. The downpours, including significant overnight showers, are expected to persist throughout the week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in Mumbai for the day.

Early Monday, heavy rains continued in Mumbai’s Dindoshi area, resulting in widespread waterlogging. The IMD forecasted heavy rainfall across Maharashtra over the next three to four days, particularly affecting the Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada regions from July 8 to July 10, 2024.

Mumbai and its suburbs experienced severe waterlogging on key roads and low-lying areas, leading to major traffic snarls and disrupting daily life. Several train services were cancelled, and 27 flights were diverted from the Mumbai airport due to low visibility and runway suspensions between 2:22 am and 3:40 am. The city recorded over 300 mm of rainfall in six hours from 1 am to 7 am, according to civic officials.

Areas including Andheri, Kurla, Bhandup, King’s Circle, Vile Parle, and Dadar reported significant water accumulation. The relentless rain overwhelmed storm drains, causing traffic standstills in many parts of the city. The BMC announced a half-day holiday for government and private schools and colleges, with a decision on afternoon classes pending.

Highways and key roads not submerged by water saw heavy traffic during Monday morning rush hours, with long stretches of vehicles struggling to navigate. Visuals from the Western Expressway showed extensive traffic congestion.

The IMD’s latest forecast indicates continued heavy rainfall for Mumbai in the coming hours, urging residents to remain cautious and prepared for further disruptions.
