04/07/2024- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow warning’ for several districts in Odisha, forecasting heavy rainfall over the next few days. The alert includes the possibility of intense showers coinciding with the Rath Yatra day on July 7, 2024.

Heavy rains are expected to drench various districts of Odisha starting from July 7, potentially affecting the annual Rath Yatra festivities in Puri. This year’s Rath Yatra will feature two days of Rath pulling, including Nabajouban Darshan, Netroutsav, and Rath Yatra ceremonies condensed into one day.

Despite the weather challenges, efforts are underway to ensure the procession proceeds smoothly and systematically. However, the forecast indicates the formation of a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal on July 7, likely resulting in heavy rains, particularly in South Odisha.

The Bhubaneswar Meteorological Center has predicted heavy rain for July 6 and July 7, attributing the weather pattern to cyclonic activities over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and North Bangladesh regions. The rainfall is expected to persist over the state for the next five days, with intermittent showers continuing until July 17.

Odisha has experienced a 25% deficit in rainfall since June 1, with normal to moderate rain recorded in various districts and isolated heavy downpours observed in others.
