June 8, 2024 – Ramoji Rao, the esteemed media tycoon and founder of Eenadu and Ramoji Film City, passed away in the early hours of Saturday at 87. Rao was rushed to Star Hospital in Hyderabad on June 5 after experiencing high blood pressure and breathlessness but succumbed in the early hours today.
President Droupadi Murmu offered her condolences, stating that India has “lost a titan of the media and entertainment sector.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sorrow, describing Rao’s passing as “extremely saddening.”
Born in 1936, Ramoji Rao was the head of the Ramoji Group, which owns Ramoji Film City, the world’s largest film production facility. He also led Eenadu, one of the largest circulated Telugu-language daily newspapers. Throughout his career, Rao produced about 50 films and telefilms.
In 2016, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honour, for his contributions to journalism, literature, and education. His passing marks the end of an era in the Indian media and entertainment industry.
