Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Pune Hosts International Organ Transplant Workshop in Partnership with Can Tho University

Pune, December 21, 2024: Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, in collaboration with Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam, successfully conducted an International Workshop on Organ Transplantation. The workshop served as a dynamic platform for medical experts, faculty and students to exchange ideas, share advancements and explore critical topics surrounding organ transplantation, including its challenges and future innovations. The event opened with Dr. Shubhangi Kanitkar from the Medicine Department delivering an insightful session on the Basic Introduction to Organ Transplants, setting the tone for the day’s discussions. This was followed by Dr. Prajwal Rao, Head of the Neurology Department, who emphasized the importance of Diagnosis of Brain Death as a crucial step for timely and effective organ donation. Dr. Asir Tambli, in charge of the Multi-Organ Transplant ICU presented a compelling Case Study on Organ Transplant, offering practical insights into patient care.

A key highlight of the workshop was Vietnam’s Journey in Kidney Transplantation: Challenges, Innovations and the Road Ahead, presented by Dr. TRAN Thai Thanh Tam, Vice Dean of Can Tho University, which brought a global perspective to the table. The event was also attended by Dr. LE Van Minh, Dean, along with other faculty members from Can Tho University. The Panel Discussion on Joint Research Projects in Transplants, featuring esteemed faculty such as Dr. Anurag Garg, Dr. M.S. Barthwal, Dr. Vikram Vikhe and other distinguished experts, explored opportunities for collaborative research to advance transplantation outcomes. The day’s proceedings concluded with a combined session on Yoga and Hypertension, which underscored the importance of holistic approaches to health in transplant recovery, followed by a visit to the hospital’s facilities and an engaging discussion summarizing key takeaways and future collaboration strategies.

Dr. Yashraj Patil, Trustee and Treasurer of Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, Pune, expressed his enthusiasm for the workshop, stating, “This event demonstrates our institution’s commitment to advancing healthcare solutions and fostering international partnerships. Dr. Rekha Arcot, Dean of Dr. D. Y. Speaking on the importance of organ transplantation, Dr. Shubhangi Kanitkar, Professor, Department of Medicine, stated, “Organ transplantation is one of the greatest achievements of modern science. It offers hope and the opportunity for enhanced quality of life to individuals grappling with end-stage organ failure. This workshop marks a crucial step towards knowledge dissemination and overcoming disparities in transplantation practices.”

Adding to this, Dr. Prajwal Rao, Head of the Neurology Department, highlighted the importance of such collaborations, saying, “Brain death determination is a critical step in successful organ transplantation. This workshop highlights the importance of refining protocols and sharing expertise to ensure timely and effective organ donation. Collaborations like this allow us to address challenges together and improve outcomes for patients across borders.”

Dr. Asir Tamboli, In charge of the Multi-Organ Transplant ICU and Assistant Professor in the Critical Care Team, remarked, “Managing patients in the transplant ICU requires a multidisciplinary approach and meticulous care. This workshop has been instrumental in sharing best practices and innovative strategies that enhance patient outcomes in organ transplantation. Collaborative learning experiences like these are invaluable in our continuous effort to provide exceptional critical care.”
