16/07/2024- In the latest United Nations World Urbanization Prospects report, three Indian cities have secured positions in the world’s 20 most populated cities & Delhi ranks no.2 on the world’s most populated city. This report, released on July 11 to mark World Population Day, aims to raise awareness about global population challenges, opportunities, and trends.
With a population of 33,807,403, Delhi has experienced a 2.34% growth from the previous year, making it the second most populous city globally. Mumbai, ranked ninth, reported a population growth of 1.50%, reaching 21,673,149 in 2024. Kolkata, positioned at 18th, saw a population increase of 1.08%, bringing its total to 15,570,786.
The top 10 most populated cities in India are:
1. Delhi
2. Mumbai
3. Kolkata
4. Bengaluru
5. Chennai
6. Hyderabad
7. Ahmedabad
8. Surat
9. Pune
10. Jaipur
Tokyo, Japan, topped the list with a population of 37,115,035. The report underscores the significant urban growth and demographic shifts occurring in major cities worldwide.
