Bhubaneswar: The Congress on Monday expelled former Odisha MLA Mohammed Moquim from the party, citing anti-party activities and indiscipline, in a move that signals the leadership’s intent to enforce organisational discipline ahead of key political challenges in the state, according to media reprots.
In an official communication, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) stated that Moquim’s expulsion follows repeated instances of actions and statements that were found to be contrary to the party’s interests and line. The decision was taken after a review of his conduct and was approved by the competent authority.
Mohammed Moquim, a senior leader from Odisha, had represented the Cuttack-Barabati constituency in the state assembly and was considered an influential face of the party in coastal Odisha. However, party sources said his recent political conduct and public positions had caused “serious damage to party unity and discipline.”
Political Implications in Odisha
Moquim’s expulsion is likely to have political repercussions in Cuttack and adjoining regions, where he has a personal support base. However, Congress leaders expressed confidence that the organisation would remain united and continue its efforts to rebuild at the grassroots level.
Political observers see the move as part of a broader effort by Congress to tighten its internal structure and assert discipline, particularly in states where factionalism has affected performance.
There was no immediate response from Mohammed Moquim at the time of filing this report.
The development comes amid renewed efforts by the Congress to reposition itself as a strong opposition force in Odisha, with an emphasis on organisational discipline, clarity of messaging, and leadership accountability.
