11th June 2024- A week after securing a majority in the 147-member Odisha Assembly, the BJP legislature party is set to hold its first meeting today to select the new chief minister. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has arrived in Bhubaneswar to oversee the selection process.
With Sambalpur MP Dharmendra Pradhan now serving in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet, the spotlight has shifted to Suresh Pujari, elected from the Brajarajnagar assembly seat. Another prominent name in consideration is Girish Murmu, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and former Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, who previously served as Narendra Modi’s principal secretary during his tenure as Gujarat CM.
A press release from the I & PR Department of Odisha says that all government offices under the BMC zone will remain closed for the second half from 1.30 of the day on June 12, 2024. Additionally, to ensure smooth traffic regulation, no vehicles will be allowed to ply from Jaydev Vihar Square to Nalco Square Road, including all connecting lanes and bylanes, from 2 PM to 7 PM, or until the conclusion of the scheduled function. Only vehicles with authorized passes will be permitted during this time.
Party sources indicate that the chosen candidate will visit the Shree Jagannath temple in Puri before taking the oath of office on Wednesday. The official oath-taking ceremony for Odisha’s new chief minister is scheduled for tomorrow.
