17th June 2024- As the election for the Lok Sabha Speaker draws near, all eyes are on the prestigious seat, with widespread speculation about who will assume the role next. The election is scheduled for June 26, two days after the commencement of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha.
The INDIA bloc of the Opposition has emphasized that the Speaker’s post should be allocated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners, specifically the Janata Dal (United) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). The opposition parties have shown a keen interest in the Speaker’s position after a decade-long interval, indicating their willingness to exert pressure if not granted the Deputy Speaker’s role.
The announcement of the election date has intensified speculation, with the NDA partners likely to convene around June 22 or June 23 to finalize their candidate. The BJP is reportedly considering offering the Deputy Speaker role to its NDA allies as part of the negotiations.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, a senior BJP leader, has been tasked with negotiating with the (JD-U) and TDP to secure a consensus candidate for the crucial parliamentary role, which is essential for the smooth functioning of Lok Sabha proceedings.
As the election date approaches, political manoeuvring and discussions are expected to heighten, making this a closely watched event in the Indian political landscape.
