18/07/2024- Today, July 18th, the sacred ritual of Adharpana will be conducted in Puri, offering sweet water to Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath on their chariots a day before their return to the temple. ‘Adhar’ (lips) and ‘Pana’ (sweet water) signify the offering of sweet water in pots that touch the deities’ lips.

As per tradition, the ‘Pania Apata Sevakas’ fetch water from a well near ‘Chhauni Matha’ by the ‘Singha Dwara’ (Lions Gate) in Puri. The ‘Supakaras’ then prepare the ‘Pana’ using ingredients such as milk cream, cheese, sugar, banana, camphor, nutmeg, black pepper, and other spices. Patribadu, Suarabadu, Garabadu Palia Sevaka, and Pujapanda Sevaka perform the offering.

After the offering, the pots are broken to release the souls and invisible beings residing in the chariots. This refreshment is exclusively for the gods and goddesses who remain on the chariots during Rath Yatra to guard Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra. Devotees are forbidden from partaking in this sacred drink. The massive pots used are crafted by the potters of Kumbharpada.

The Adharpana ritual holds significant spiritual importance and is an essential part of the Rath Yatra festivities in Puri.
