Understanding and Preventing the Zika Virus

Estimated read time 1 min read

12/07/2024- Zika virus infection does not always present symptoms, but when they do occur, they typically appear within two weeks of being bitten by an infected mosquito. Common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain, muscle pain, headache, and conjunctivitis. These symptoms are generally mild, affecting only 1 out of 5 infected individuals.

Anyone who has travelled to a Zika-affected area in the last 12 weeks and experiences symptoms should get tested immediately. Pregnant women who have visited these areas or have had unprotected sex with a male potentially exposed to Zika, regardless of symptom presence, should consult a doctor about testing. The Zika test is a simple blood test.

Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to cure Zika. Mosquitoes, which thrive in dark, humid places and standing water, are the primary carriers of the virus. They are most active from sunrise to sunset.

To protect yourself from mosquito bites, use mosquito repellent as directed on the product label. Additionally, wearing long-sleeved shirts and long trousers, sleeping or resting in screened or air-conditioned rooms, and using mosquito nets can help reduce the risk of Zika virus infection.
