The event aligned with this year’s theme, “Brain Health for All,” and provided valuable insights on how to slow memory decline and reduce the risk of developing various brain related ailments, the commonest being Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Emphasizing the numerous benefits of regular physical activity for brain health, Dr. Vipul Gupta-Group Director and HOD-Neurointervention, Paras Hospital, Gurugram, said “Research shows physically active individuals are less likely to experience mental function decline and have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, which helps counteract the natural reduction in brain connections that occurs with aging. It is advised atleast aim for 30 to 60 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, such as walking, swimming, or playing tennis, several times per week.”

Dr. Vipul Gupta also emphasized the importance of various lifestyle factors in maintaining brain health. He highlighted the critical role of sleep in clearing abnormal proteins and consolidating memories, recommending seven to eight consecutive hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. He also stressed the significance of a Mediterranean diet rich in plant-based foods, whole grains, fish, and healthy fats, which is associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s and improved cognitive function.

Mental stimulation through activities like reading, puzzles, and games was encouraged to build new brain connections and maintain cognitive flexibility. Social interaction was noted as crucial for preventing depression and stress, thereby supporting memory and mental health. Regular check-ups to monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels were advised, alongside lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity, a healthy diet, moderated alcohol intake, and avoiding tobacco use, to maintain healthy arteries and veins essential for both heart and brain health.

Dr Vipul further added “Brain health is essential for overall well-being, especially as we age. By adopting healthy lifestyle habits and staying informed, we can significantly reduce the risk of cognitive decline and maintain a high quality of life. On the occasion of World Brain Day, our goal is to empower individuals with knowledge and practical tips to take proactive steps towards preserving their brain health.”

Paras Hospital, Gurugram, remains dedicated to advancing neurological health through public education, state-of-the-art medical care, and ongoing research. This awareness session is part of the hospital’s broader initiative to promote brain health and improve patient outcomes.
