Mumbai/Kolkata, Mar 10:  Highlighting the life-saving impact of organ donation, doctors at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur successfully performed a kidney transplant on a 54-year-old woman suffering from advanced kidney disease, after receiving an organ from a brain-dead donor.

The donor, Jharna Das, a 71-year-old woman with blood group O positive, had been admitted to another city hospital on 5th March 2026, following intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Despite all medical efforts, she was declared brain dead after the necessary clinical evaluations. In a remarkable act of generosity during a time of grief, her family consented to organ donation, enabling multiple critically ill patients to receive life-saving transplants. As part of the final organ allocation, her second kidney was sent to Manipal Hospital Mukundapur.

At the hospital, the kidney transplant was successfully performed under the care of Dr. Rohit Rungta, Consultant – Nephrology, Manipal Hospital Mukundapur. The recipient, Debjani Sarkar (54), was suffering from chronic kidney disease caused by autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, a genetic condition in which multiple fluid-filled cysts develop in the kidneys and gradually impair their function. She had been undergoing regular dialysis through a permanent catheter.

In addition, she had a complex medical history that included a seizure disorder and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea, a condition where the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord leaks through the nose. Following the transplant, she now has renewed hope for a healthier and more independent life.

Speaking about the importance of organ donation, Dr. Rohit Rungta said, “Organ donation is one of the most selfless acts that can save multiple lives. The decision taken by the donors family during an incredibly difficult time has helped give patients a second chance at life. Increasing awareness about organ donation can help bridge the gap between the demand and availability of organs.”

Doctors emphasized that a single organ donor can save several lives and restore sight to others, making organ donation a powerful way to give hope to patients waiting for transplants.

Manipal Hospital Mukundapur expressed its deepest gratitude to the donors family for their noble decision, which has brought renewed life and hope to several patients.
