National Safe Motherhood Day: Strengthening Systems for Safer Motherhood

by Dr Tarakeswari Surapaneni, Chief Medical Director, Fernandez Hospital, on why safe motherhood must extend beyond childbirth.

Hyderabad, Apr 10: On the occasion of National Safe Motherhood Day, which is observed on 11 April every year, Fernandez Hospital reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every woman experiences a safe, respectful, and supported journey through pregnancy and childbirth.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Tarakeswari Surapaneni, Chief Medical Director, Fernandez Hospital, emphasised that safe motherhood extends far beyond the moment of birth.

“Safe motherhood is not just about childbirth; it is about supporting women through every stage of their journey. At Fernandez, this care often begins even before pregnancy, through pre-pregnancy counselling that helps women prepare for a healthy start,” she said.

At Fernandez Hospital, maternity care is designed to be continuous and collaborative. During pregnancy, women receive personalised care from multidisciplinary teams comprising obstetricians, professional midwives, and specialists in obstetric medicine. This integrated approach ensures that both low-risk and high-risk pregnancies are managed with equal attention, expertise, and sensitivity.

The hospital strongly advocates for natural birthing and midwife-led care, creating an environment that supports physiological birth. At the same time, it ensures that advanced medical support such as a dedicated Obstetric ICU and specialised neonatal teams is readily available whenever needed, providing a seamless balance between natural care and clinical safety.

Dr Tarakeswari further highlighted the importance of care beyond delivery, “Our responsibility does not end with birth. Post-pregnancy support, including specialised clinics for mothers, is an essential part of ensuring long-term health and wellbeing.”

Fernandez Hospital continues to champion a model of care that prioritises dignity, respect, and evidence-based practices. By focusing on the entire continuum from preconception to postnatal care, the hospital aims to ensure that every woman feels safe, informed, and supported throughout her motherhood journey.
