Medical Breakthrough in Mumbai: Super Obese Patient Walks Within 2 Hours of Surgery

Mumbai, Mar 20: In a remarkable example of how modern surgical care is transforming recovery after weight loss surgery, a female patient with super morbid obesity (BMI 57) was able to walk just two hours after undergoing bariatric surgery at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.

The patient weighed 127 kg prior to the surgery.

The surgery was performed using advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques by Dr Rajiv Manek, Metabolic & Bariatric, Laparoscopic & Robotic Surgeon, along with a multidisciplinary team at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road. Severe obesity is a complex medical condition that affects far more than body weight. Patients with very high BMI frequently suffer from associated health problems such as diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, joint pain, fatigue and a significantly reduced quality of life. For individuals with severe obesity, metabolic and bariatric surgery is considered the most effective and scientifically proven treatment for achieving sustained weight loss and improving obesity-related medical conditions.

In this case, the surgery was completed safely with minimal tissue trauma using modern laparoscopic techniques. What made the recovery particularly noteworthy was the use of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol, a modern evidence-based approach designed to reduce surgical stress and accelerate patient recovery.

Following surgery, the patient did not require a Ryles (nasogastric) tube or urinary catheter and did not need an ICU stay. She was encouraged to begin walking within just two hours of the procedure, was able to start clear liquids within the same time frame, and was discharged from the hospital within 48 hours. Such rapid recovery reflects how surgical care has evolved with the integration of minimally invasive techniques, advanced anesthesia and structured recovery protocols.

Commenting on the case, Dr Rajiv Manek said, “Severe obesity is not simply about excess weight; it is a serious disease that affects multiple systems in the body and can significantly impact quality of life. Today, with modern laparoscopic bariatric surgery and ERAS recovery protocols, we are able to offer patients safer procedures, minimal pain, faster recovery and early return to daily activities. Our focus is not just on weight loss but on improving metabolic health and giving patients a new opportunity to live healthier lives.”

The successful outcome was the result of a coordinated multidisciplinary effort involving surgical, anesthesia and nursing teams. Special acknowledgement was given to Dr Farzeen Qureshi and the anesthesia team, along with the operation theatre staff, administrative team and billing department who contributed to delivering a smooth and comfortable patient experience at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.

Medical experts emphasize that severe obesity is a chronic medical condition rather than a lack of willpower, and timely medical intervention can significantly reduce the risk of long-term complications. With advances in laparoscopic bariatric surgery and enhanced recovery protocols, patients are now able to undergo treatment more safely while experiencing faster healing and shorter hospital stays.
