Study Highlights the Impact of Sleep on Type 2 Diabetes
19th July 2024- A recent study has revealed that irregular sleep patterns over a week can heighten the risk of type 2 diabetes by 34 per cent in middle-aged and older individuals. The findings underscore the importance of consistent sleep duration in preventing diabetes.
Can Lack of Sleep Cause Diabetes?
The research indicates that individuals with variations in sleep duration exceeding 60 minutes face a significantly higher risk of developing diabetes compared to those with more consistent sleep patterns. This variation in sleep was linked to a 34 per cent increase in diabetes risk.

After adjusting for factors such as lifestyle, health conditions, environment, and body fat, the increased risk associated with irregular sleep was reduced to 11 per cent. This suggests that while sleep patterns are a significant factor, other elements also contribute to the risk of diabetes.

Although evaluating sleep duration over just seven days might not fully reflect long-term sleep habits, researchers emphasize that modifying sleep patterns could reduce the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.
