Mumbai, Feb 26: Breast cancer is now the most common cancer among women in India. Recent estimates show a steady rise in new cases each year, with many patients unfortunately diagnosed at advanced stages due to lack of awareness and delayed screening. While urban areas report higher incidence, limited awareness and access to screening in several regions remain a concern. Experts emphasize that early detection through regular screening can significantly improve survival rates.

Dr. Aditi Agrawal, Consultant General Surgery and Breast Oncosurgery at Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road, stated that awareness and timely consultation are critical in the fight against breast cancer. “Breast cancer is highly treatable when identified early. Women should not ignore warning signs such as a breast lump, change in size or shape, nipple discharge, or skin dimpling. Early medical evaluation can make treatment less aggressive and outcomes far more positive,” she said.

Dr. Agrawal advised that women above 40 years should undergo routine mammography as recommended, while younger women should remain breast aware and consult a specialist if they notice any unusual changes. She also highlighted that individuals with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer should follow a structured screening protocol.

“At Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road, we focus on early diagnosis, advanced surgical care, and personalized treatment planning to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients,” she added.

World Cancer Day is observed globally on 4th February, but awareness initiatives continue throughout the month across hospitals in India. Marking the occasion, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road also conducted cancer awareness activities, educational sessions, and screening initiatives to encourage early detection and community participation in the fight against cancer.

The message remains clear: awareness, screening, and timely treatment can save lives.  World Cancer Day is an international day observed every 4 February to raise awareness about cancer, encourage its prevention, and mobilise action to address the global cancer epidemic.
