Diphtheria Outbreak Expands to Koraput and Kalahandi

19th June 2024- Diphtheria, after its initial outbreak in the Kashipur area of Rayagada, is now spreading to the Koraput and Kalahandi districts in Odisha. Health officials have reported a total of 21 cases of the bacterial infection across these three districts. The outbreak has claimed five lives in the state so far.

Rayagada remains the most affected with 15 reported cases, while Koraput and Kalahandi have reported 1 and 4-5 cases respectively. Samples from the infected individuals have been sent for examination, and special health teams are actively conducting surveillance and taking precautionary measures to contain the spread.

In response to the outbreak, anti-diphtheria serum has been administered to those infected. Additionally, a team from the World Health Organization (WHO) is collaborating with health department officials to visit the affected villages, providing support and guidance. The health department has urged residents to use masks as a precautionary measure to prevent further spread of the infection.
