Cholera Outbreaks in India

With the onset of the monsoon, cholera cases have emerged in two Indian states. In Gujarat, parts of Rajkot have been declared cholera-affected after two cases were detected. Meanwhile, Kerala has reported an outbreak of cholera at a private care home in Thiruvananthapuram’s Neyyattinkara area.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the Vibrio cholerae bacterium. It can lead to severe diarrhoea, and dehydration, and can be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and severe dehydration.

In Kerala, the State Health Department is on high alert, implementing preventive measures to control the spread of the disease. State Health Minister Veena George stated that the incident in Neyyattinkara was initially suspected to be food poisoning. However, upon confirmation of cholera, the Medical Officer of Perumpazhuthoor Primary Health Centre promptly took necessary actions.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), many people infected with Vibrio cholerae do not show symptoms, but the bacteria are present in their faeces for 1–10 days post-infection, potentially infecting others. The presence of cholera bacteria in the environment underscores the importance of maintaining hygiene and safe water practices to prevent outbreaks.

Health authorities in both states are urging the public to follow strict hygiene practices and ensure safe drinking water to curb the spread of cholera. Immediate medical attention is advised for anyone exhibiting symptoms of diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, or dehydration.
