Alexandria, Va., Apr 03: The American Counseling Association (ACA) is observing Counseling Awareness Month this April to recognize the vital contributions of professional counselors and to increase public understanding of when and how to seek counseling support. This year’s campaign places a special emphasis on child and adolescent mental health, alongside resources such as digital wellness guidance for teens.

As part of the observance, Counseling Awareness Month aligns with the ACA’s flagship ACA 2026 Conference & Expo, scheduled to take place April 9–11 in Columbus. The event will bring together counseling professionals from across the country for education, networking, and discussions on the latest developments in mental health care.

The initiative also coincides with Teal Day on April 10, a day dedicated to raising awareness about mental health, reducing stigma, and highlighting the essential role counselors play in promoting well-being and self-care.

“Counseling Awareness Month plays a key role in highlighting the expertise embedded in professional counselors that helps shape the lives of so many throughout the entire nation,” said Brian D. Banks, Chief Executive Officer of ACA. “We deeply value the commitment counselors make to their students, clients, and communities, and remain dedicated to advancing and supporting the profession.”

In addition to awareness efforts, the month highlights important legislative progress that is expanding access to counseling services. A notable example is the Counseling Compact, which has been passed by legislatures in 39 states and jurisdictions. The Compact enables licensed professional counselors to practice across state lines, improving continuity of care and access to services for individuals in need.

“Professional counselors combine science, compassion, and advocacy to help individuals heal, grow, and reclaim hope,” said Elsa Soto Leggett, President of ACA. “We are committed to creating safe, ethical, and culturally responsive spaces where people can find direction and support for their lives.”

Through Counseling Awareness Month, ACA continues to reinforce the importance of mental health support systems, encourage early engagement with counseling services, and advocate for policies that strengthen access to care nationwide.
