A less than 1-cm endoscopic procedure relieves severe slipped disc pain and helps teenager return home in 24 hours

Thane, March 26: A 19-year-old teenager who had become almost immobile due to severe slipped disc pain was successfully treated with Endoscopic Spine Surgery (Endoscopic Discectomy) at KIMS Hospital, Thane, by Dr Jayesh Bhanushali, Consultant – Spine Surgery, helping him stand and walk within two hours and return home within 24 hours. The young patient had been suffering from worsening leg pain for several weeks, and the minimally invasive keyhole procedure was performed to remove the damaged disc pressing on his nerve without open surgery, leading to rapid recovery.

Just a few weeks earlier, the teenager had been active, independent, and living a normal life. But suddenly, severe pain began shooting down his leg. What started as mild discomfort soon became unbearable. He struggled to stand, walk, or even sit comfortably. Every day activities became difficult, and sleepless nights and constant pain began affecting his physical and emotional well-being. Pain medicines and rest provided no relief, and his condition continued to deteriorate.

After detailed evaluation, doctors identified the cause as a herniated disc, commonly known as a slipped disc, where the soft cushioning disc between the spine bones presses on nearby nerves, causing intense pain and weakness. Considering the patient’s young age and severity of symptoms, the team recommended Endoscopic Spine Surgery, a modern minimally invasive alternative to traditional open surgery.

The procedure was performed through a very small cut, less than one centimetre, using a thin camera called an endoscope. This allowed doctors to clearly see the affected nerve and remove only the damaged portion of the disc, while preserving surrounding muscles and tissues.

The improvement was almost immediate. Within two hours, the teenager was able to stand and walk comfortably — something he had been unable to do for weeks. His pain reduced significantly, and he was discharged within 24 hours, marking a dramatic turnaround in his condition.

Explaining the benefits, Dr Jayesh Bhanushali, Consultant – Spine Surgery, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said, “Endoscopic Spine Surgery is a major advancement because it causes minimal damage to muscles and tissues. Patients experience less pain, recover faster, and can return to their normal routine much earlier compared to traditional open spine surgery.”

The Orthopedic Spine Team, including Dr. Amogh Zawar, Consultant Spine Surgeon, emphasised that early diagnosis and timely intervention play a crucial role in preventing long-term complications.

Unlike conventional surgery, which involves larger cuts and longer healing time, endoscopic procedures protect the natural structure of the spine, reduce complications, and allow faster recovery and mobility.

For the young patient and his family, the recovery was life-changing. From being unable to walk due to constant pain to walking confidently within hours, he regained not only his mobility but also his independence and confidence.

Doctors emphasise that early diagnosis and timely treatment using minimally invasive techniques can help patients recover faster and avoid prolonged disability. This case highlights how modern spine surgery is helping even young patients return quickly to normal life with minimal pain and faster healing.
