Hyderabad, Feb 06: Highlighting the importance of continuous medical education in pain management, KIMS Hospital organised a workshop for anaesthesiologists and pain physicians focusing on advanced techniques for managing chronic and severe pain. The workshop aimed to update medical professionals on the latest pain relief modalities and to train them in delivering patient-specific pain management solutions.
The workshop was inaugurated by Medical Director of KIMS Hospitals Dr. Sambit Sahu, along with Dr. Krishna Poddar, President of the Indian Society for the Study of Pain (ISSP), Dr. Anurag Agarwal, Secretary of ISSP, and Organising Secretary Dr. Nagalakshmi Patnala. The programme was conducted under the aegis of the Telangana chapter of the Society for the Study of Pain, with Organising Chairperson Dr. Uma Maheshwara Rao, Organising Secretary Dr. Nagalakshmi Patnala, Workshop Coordinator and Treasurer Dr. Madhukar, and Scientific Chairperson Dr. Sachin Joshi.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sambit Sahu said that the workshop primarily focused on the extensive use of ultrasound and fluoroscopy in perioperative settings and chronic pain clinics to ensure effective pain control. “We utilised this platform to enhance awareness and disseminate knowledge. Participants had the opportunity to learn real-time imaging techniques from experienced faculty, which play a vital role in improving accuracy and safety in pain management procedures,” he said.
Emphasising KIMS Hospitals’ commitment to education and training, he added that along with providing routine clinical care, the institution consistently works towards creating learning opportunities for healthcare professionals. “Effective treatment of chronic and severe pain not only reduces discomfort but also improves functional ability and overall quality of life. These interventions are especially beneficial when conventional treatments fail or when surgery is not feasible. Real-time imaging using fluoroscopy and ultrasound significantly enhances the safety and efficacy of these procedures,” he explained.
Members of the Society for the Study of Pain, Telangana chapter, noted that the workshop addressed the educational needs of anaesthesiologists and pain physicians. They stated that ultrasound enables real-time identification of nerves, making it particularly useful for trauma-related pain management and perioperative analgesia. It also serves as a safer alternative to general anaesthesia in high-risk patients.
They further pointed out that chronic conditions such as back pain, neuropathic pain and cancer-related pain often do not respond adequately to conventional medical therapy but can be effectively managed through percutaneous interventions. The use of fluoroscopy and ultrasound enhances procedural safety. The workshop provided hands-on experience through cadaver-based training and live real-time imaging sessions using volunteers, offering participants valuable practical exposure to advanced pain management techniques.
