United Nations, August 18: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on Iran and the United States to resume negotiations towards a peaceful and durable settlement, warning that there is no military solution to the ongoing conflict.
Speaking through his spokesman Stephane Dujarric, Guterres urged both sides to return to dialogue as soon as possible, reduce escalating rhetoric and avoid further military action. His appeal came as the 60-day deadline under the June 17 Iran-US memorandum of understanding for reaching a final agreement expired.
The UN chief’s intervention comes amid heightened tensions and stalled diplomatic efforts. Guterres has consistently maintained that a comprehensive and lasting settlement can only be achieved through dialogue and negotiations, while regional actors including Turkey have also called for renewed diplomacy to de-escalate the crisis.
