Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, held a series of high-level meetings this week aimed at accelerating India’s shipbuilding capabilities and strengthening the nation’s long-term maritime vision.
The discussions brought together stakeholders from leading shipyards, maritime technology firms, oil and gas sector representatives, and senior government officials. The focus was on increasing domestic shipbuilding capacity, enhancing the competitiveness of Indian yards, and supporting India’s growing needs in energy transportation and coastal logistics.
Shri Puri underscored the crucial role of shipbuilding in India’s economic and strategic framework. He highlighted that a robust domestic shipbuilding ecosystem will not only support the country’s energy supply chain—particularly for LNG, crude, and petroleum products—but also help India emerge as a global maritime manufacturing hub.
The Minister emphasized the importance of modernizing infrastructure, adopting advanced technologies, and encouraging private-sector participation to strengthen the sector. He also stressed on skill development, innovation in green shipping, and increased indigenous content in vessel construction in line with the Government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Industry representatives discussed opportunities in constructing specialized vessels, offshore support ships, tankers, and next-generation platforms required for the energy sector. They also shared proposals to improve global competitiveness, reduce delivery timelines, and expand export potential.
The consultations form part of the Government’s broader efforts to enhance maritime logistics, expand coastal shipping, and support India’s aspiration to become a leading player in global trade and maritime innovation. More meetings are expected in the coming months to finalize a roadmap for scaling up shipbuilding and ship repair capabilities across the country.
