The Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industries (PLISFPI) continues to deliver strong results, driving expansion in domestic manufacturing capacity and boosting exports of processed food products, according to information shared by Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Shri Ravneet Singh in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

As of September 2025, a total of 170 applications have been approved across various categories under the scheme, reflecting high industry interest and participation.

Manufacturing Capacity Expands Significantly

The Minister reported that the scheme has facilitated an increase of 35 lakh metric tonnes per annum in the country’s food processing capacity. This expansion is supporting value addition in key food categories and strengthening India’s competitiveness in global markets.

Employment Generation Gains Momentum

PLISFPI has also emerged as a major employment enabler, generating an estimated 3.39 lakh direct and indirect jobs so far. While data on the number of farmers directly benefiting from the scheme is not maintained, officials note that the expansion of processing units indirectly supports farmer income through improved market access and reduced post-harvest losses.

Export Performance Shows Strong Growth

Highlighting the global impact of the scheme, the Minister stated that exports of agricultural processed food products approved under PLISFPI have grown at a CAGR of 13.23% during 2019–20 to 2024–25. Officials attribute this growth to improved domestic manufacturing capabilities and enhanced compliance with global quality and safety standards.

Under the incentive framework, benefits are granted only when the entire manufacturing chain—including primary processing—takes place within India, ensuring value addition and employment generation remain domestic.

Strengthening India’s Position in Global Food Value Chains

The PLISFPI aims to modernize India’s food processing ecosystem, promote globally competitive manufacturing, reduce wastage, and integrate Indian producers with international supply chains. Officials said the scheme is playing a pivotal role in elevating India’s status as a reliable supplier of high-quality processed food products worldwide.
