Historic Bascule Bridge at Kolkata Dock System

The government has approved a major infrastructure upgrade at one of eastern India’s most historic maritime gateways. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has cleared a ₹117.54 crore proposal to renovate the historic Bascule Bridge at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, a key structure inside the Kolkata Dock System (KDS).

The project marks an effort to preserve a decades-old engineering landmark while adapting it to the operational demands of a modern port.

Modernising a critical port artery

The nearly six-decade-old double-leaf Bascule Bridge is an important internal transport link within the Kolkata Dock System. It facilitates both vehicular traffic and cargo movement across dock areas, connecting operational zones that support port logistics.

Over time, however, ageing infrastructure and mechanical systems have raised concerns about efficiency and safety. The renovation project aims to address these issues through a comprehensive structural and electro-mechanical upgrade.

Once completed, the bridge is expected to allow smoother movement of cargo vehicles and improve operational coordination within the port area.

Investment with Sagarmala support

The proposal submitted by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port was reviewed by the Delegated Investment Board (DIB) of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The board, chaired by the ministry’s secretary, appraised the project during a meeting held on 16 February 2026.

Out of the total estimated project cost of ₹117.54 crore, about ₹41 crore will be supported through the Sagarmala Programme, the central government’s flagship initiative aimed at strengthening port infrastructure and improving logistics efficiency.

The funding reflects the programme’s broader goal of modernising port facilities while improving connectivity between maritime gateways and inland transport networks.

Engineering heritage meets modern technology

The bridge was originally built by Waagner-Biro Bridge Systems AG, a firm known for constructing complex movable bridge systems around the world.

Bascule bridges, often referred to as drawbridges, use a counterweight mechanism that allows the bridge deck to lift, enabling vessels to pass underneath. Such structures were historically essential in busy port environments where maritime and road traffic intersected.

The renovation will upgrade both the structural elements and the electro-mechanical systems that control the lifting mechanism. This will help extend the bridge’s operational life while ensuring compliance with modern safety and efficiency standards.

Implementation and execution

The renovation will be implemented by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), which has been tasked with overseeing the project.

Execution of the engineering work has been awarded to H & H Fressinet, a firm with experience in specialised structural upgrades and infrastructure rehabilitation.

The project will focus on restoring structural integrity, upgrading mechanical systems, and improving operational reliability without disrupting ongoing port activities.

Strengthening eastern India’s maritime gateway

The Kolkata Dock System remains a vital node in eastern India’s maritime network, handling a mix of bulk cargo, containers, and inland waterway traffic. Efficient internal infrastructure is essential for maintaining cargo turnaround times and overall port productivity.

By upgrading the historic Bascule Bridge, the government aims to improve internal logistics while preserving an important piece of port heritage.

The renovation reflects a broader push to modernise India’s maritime infrastructure, where historic facilities are being adapted to meet the needs of a growing trade economy.
