After years of flip-flops and fierce debates, Amaravati is finally poised to become Andhra Pradesh’s Official State capital.

The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly kicks off its sixth session tomorrow, March 28, where lawmakers are expected to pass a resolution locking on Amaravati as the state’s sole capital, as opposed to the previous government’s three capital theory.

Since the carving out of Telengana from the original Andhra Pradesh in 2014, Amaravati has emerged as a prime focus of the state’s political and developmental discourse. Following the 2014 elections, the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu had announced Amaravati as the capital city of the new Andhra.

Later, during the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) tenure from 2019 to 2024, it sparked significant debate with their three-capital model, Amaravati as the legislative capital, Visakhapatnam as the executive one and Kurnool as the judicial one.

With the Telugu Desam Party back in power in 2024 in alliance with the Janasena Party (JSP) and the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Amaravati has re-emerged as the state’s long-term vision and stability.

The upcoming resolution to be passed on March 28 will cement Amravati permanently as the state’s capital.

Amravati was chosen because of its central location, accessibility, and for being a historically significant “greenfield” smart city. It gave the state an opportunity to build a modern, sustainable smart city from the beginning instead of upgrading outdated legacy infrastructure.

However, the leader of the Opposition and YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will not be present at tomorrow’s session which is drawing attention and weight far beyond policy, shaping perceptions around political intent and positioning.

His absence from tomorrow’s session is being watched closely by political circles as well as state residents as such moments are often perceived as indicators of critical state issues and lead to influencing people’s opinion on key issues.

As the Assembly prepares for its key resolution, Amaravati’s reaffirmation will not only decide the city’s future but also underscore the state government’s determination to restore policy clarity and stability.
