Sixteenth Finance Commission Submits Report for 2026–31 to President of India

The Sixteenth Finance Commission (XVIFC), constituted under Article 280(1) of the Constitution, has formally submitted its report for the award period 2026–27 to 2030–31 to the President of India. The submission marks an important milestone in the financial governance framework that defines India’s fiscal relations between the Union and the States.

The Commission is chaired by noted economist Dr. Arvind Panagariya, with members Smt. Annie George Mathew, Dr. Manoj Panda, Shri T. Rabi Sankar, and Dr. Soumyakanti Ghosh. The Secretary to the Commission, Shri Ritvik Pandey, was also present during the submission.

Following the formal presentation to the President, the XVIFC also handed over copies of the report to the Prime Minister and the Union Finance Minister.

The report — which will guide the distribution of tax revenues, grants-in-aid, and fiscal consolidation principles over the five-year period — is expected to play a crucial role in shaping India’s medium-term fiscal strategy, strengthening cooperative federalism, and supporting sustainable economic growth.

Further details of the Commission’s recommendations will be made public once tabled in Parliament.
