June 18, 2024 – Diesel demand in India fell by 3.9% in the first half of June compared to last year, according to preliminary data from state-owned retailers. This marks the fourth consecutive month of decline, with drops of 1.1% in May, 2.3% in April, and 2.7% in March.

Diesel, crucial for the transport and agriculture sectors, saw sales drop to 3.95 million tonnes from June 1-15. The transport sector, which accounts for 70% of diesel consumption, and the agriculture sector are showing signs of reduced economic activity.

Despite the summer harvest and high demand for air conditioning, fuel sales defied the expected trend. Petrol sales also declined by 3.6% month-on-month in early June.

This ongoing decline raises concerns about a potential economic slowdown in key sectors reliant on diesel.
