12th June 2024- The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed a human case of bird flu in India, raising concerns about public health safety. The infection, caused by the H9N2 virus, was detected in a four-year-old child in West Bengal.
The child has been admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) of a local hospital, experiencing persistent severe respiratory issues. This marks the second case of H9N2 bird flu in India, with the first reported back in 2019.
According to WHO Bird flu, also known as Avian influenza, is primarily transmitted among animals but can also infect humans. Symptoms of the infection can range from mild upper respiratory tract issues to more severe respiratory diseases. Additional symptoms may include conjunctivitis and gastrointestinal symptoms.
In light of this development, health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus. Regular handwashing, avoiding contact with sick birds or their droppings, and practising proper food hygiene are recommended measures to reduce the risk of infection.
